VISITOR INFORMATION

Sunday Services

The Lake Shore Unitarian Society meets Sundays from the Sunday following Labor Day through early June at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka.

Services begin promptly at 10:30 a.m.

Sunday services normally include: music by our accomplished concert pianist, Elif Allenfort; two congregational hymns or songs; two or three inspirational or otherwise thought-provoking readings; a 30-minute discourse by a guest speaker; 10 minutes of questions and answers with the speaker.

Services are immediately followed by an informal coffee hour with ample amounts of food and drink.

Nursery / Sunday School

Sunday School for preschool children through high school is provided at the same time as our Sunday services. All classes are held in the Women's Exchange space adjacent to the Community House. Our youth group, YAREG, seventh graders and older, attend classes, services and site visits. Like all students in our RE program they take an active part in our Social Service Projects.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their children with them when visiting LSUS.

Location, Directions, and Parking

We are located in downtown Winnetka, within 5 miles of eleven north suburban Chicago communities--Winnetka, Wilmette, Evanston, Glencoe, Kenilworth, Highland Park, Glenview, Skokie, Morton Grove, Northfield, and Northbrook.

We meet at the Winnetka Community House, which is located at the corner of Pine and Lincoln. A map providing further directions is located at the bottom of this page.

Ample parking is available in two Winnetka public parking lots immediately adjacent to the Community House. The entrance to one is on Lincoln, south of Pine; the other is on Pine, west of Lincoln.

Anything Else First-Time Visitors

Should Know?

Yes. First, we're eager to have you with us. As noted elsewhere, ours is a well-established Unitarian congregation, but also one that is actively seeking a new generation of members. Hence you're bound to be receive a warm welcome.

Second, rest assured that you'll find us to be an open, accepting group. Unitarian Universalism is by its nature an open, tolerant religion. Although our heritage is largely Judeo-Christian, we welcome people of all religious backgrounds. Ours is also a denomination that has long prided itself in its willingness to embrace diversity as it relates to race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.

Becoming a Member of

Lake Shore Unitarian Society

Joining a church--any church--can seem like a daunting task, especially if you have never made such a commitment before. We understand. Many of us have been in the same situation ourselves in the not too distant past.

The formal process of becoming a member is rather simple and straightforward. Like most other Unitarian congregations, Lake Shore requires only that you indicate your desire to join with one of our congregational leaders--the chair of our Board of Trustees, or one of the other Board members--and then sign our membership book. Once you've joined, you will be invited to attend an orientation session to learn more about Unitarian Universalist history and beliefs, the Unitarian Universalist Association, and Lake Shore Unitarian Society itself.

Deciding to join Lake Shore is very much an individual act. Moreover, there is no single path to arrive at that point. Some people feel right at home with Unitarianism and Lake Shore very quickly and commit within a matter of weeks; others, understandably, take much longer. We're more than willing to offer any information, advice, or input you'd like to help you make your decision.

How Can I/We Receive More Information?

To receive additional information by mail, or to speak with our church leaders directly, please leave a message on our answering machine (847-441-6336) or send an email note. In most instances, you should receive a reply within 24 to 48 hours.
