LSUS PROGRAMS

Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee is Lake Shore Unitarian Society's most recently organized group, and represents a renewal of the congregation's commitment to social service.

Since 1999 Lake Shore has undertaken projects with more than a half dozen social service agencies throughout the greater Chicago area. These have included the Evanston Ecumenical Action Council; Christopher House; the Evanston YWCA's Shelter for Women and Children; and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Since 2000 the Social Action Committee has also sponsored Lake Shore's participation in the annual North Shore/Skokie CROP Walk, an interfaith fundraising and educational walk to help address problems with hunger both globally and close to home.

Dinner For Eight

Dinner for Eight provides an opportunity for old and new members alike to get together for an evening of informal dining and conversation. Four-to-six times a year interested members are divided into groups of about eight. Each group gathers at one participant's home for a meal that all have helped prepare. Hosting responsibilities rotate from dinner to dinner.

Great Decisions

Great Decisions offers a forum to discuss contemporary world problems in a well informed, focused manner. Participants come together eight times over the course of the winter months, using a common reader prepared by the Foreign Policy Association as the basis for background readings and initial questions to consider. Meetings rotate among participants' homes and usually last about two hours.

Book Club

Book Club meets the third Friday each month to discuss a book chosen by group consensus. Meetings rotate among participating members' homes, and normally last about two hours.

Investment Club

The Investment Club meets at 7:45 p.m. the first Friday of each month. A portion of the Club's annual profits are traditionally donated to the Lake Shore Unitarian Society.

Men's Breakfast

Men's Breakfast offers informal coffee and conversation at 8:45 a.m. the second and fourth Friday of each month at the Ridgeview Restaraunt, Lake Avenue and Ridge Road, in Wilmette.

Movie Club

Movie Club convenes at 7:45 p.m. the fourth Friday of each month to discuss a specific film that participants have viewed prior to the gathering. Films are chosen by group consensus and typically include a mix of mainstream and art releases. Meetings rotate among members' homes.
